Living in Cambridge

Cambridge is the southernmost city in the Tri-Cities and in contrast to Kitchener and Waterloo is the manufacturing and industrial heart of the region. Separated from Kitchener by the Highway 401, Cambridge is generally considered a lower cost place to live with a more suburban character. The city's downtown is a wonderful historical city centre built around a central square and straddling the Grand River, but most of the economic action is located elsewhere. Cambridge has a population of over 120,000 people and grew by 9.1% from 2001 to 2006, a strong growth rate reflected in a high mobility rate (people moving in and out). Median household incomes are high enough to afford rents around $1,500 per month. The city's largest and most prominent employer is Toyota, but a number of other major industrial concerns actively employ thousands of Cambridge residents.

Cambridge offers 41 elementary schools and seven high schools, plus the University of Waterloo's new architecture school in the downtown and Conestoga College's main campus on Main Street. The city's farmer's market and Centre for the Arts are major attractions. Public transit is provided regionally, connecting with Kitchener and Waterloo. Cambridge is located on the south side of Highway 401 and is split down the middle by the Grand River. Highway 8 runs north to Kitchener and Waterloo and westwards to Stratford. London is about 80 km west, Guelph is less than 20 km northeast, Brantford is 20 km south, and Hamilton is 30 km southeast-renters in Cambridge can access southern Ontario's major population centres with less and an hour's drive in any direction.
